Instructions for Visiting Astronomers
UVES visitor mode observers can use non-standard instrument configurations (e.g., non-standard CCD pixel binning and/or central wavelengths in each spectrograph arm).
In order for the online data reduction pipeline installed in the telescope control room to reduce spectra obtained with non-standard settings, the local UVES calibration database must be populated with a suitable set of calibrations beforehand by the daytime support astronomer. Visitor mode observers are allowed to select up to two of their non-standard settings to be processed by the pipeline. To do so, they should fill in the UVES setup request form and hand it over to the daytime support astronomer at least one day before the observations start.
