Hypatia Reloaded: A Colloquium Series for Early-Career Astronomers in Chile 2025

The European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Office for Science (OfS) in Santiago, Chile, is thrilled to announce the third edition of the Hypatia Colloquium Series. This event provides a fantastic platform for young researchers—including PhD students and postdoctoral researchers up to three years after graduation—to share their scientific work with a wide audience.

ESO has a deep connection with Chile, thanks to the country's high-quality sky conditions for astronomical observations. With advanced observatories in the Atacama Desert, ESO benefits from Chile's clear skies. At the same time, Chile's astronomical community continues to grow, with vibrant PhD programs and diverse young astronomers bringing new scientific ideas and perspectives. Within this context, this colloquium series builds on the long collaboration between ESO and its host country, with the aim of highlighting the exciting contributions of young-career astronomers to our understanding of the Universe.

Event Details for applicants

In this initial announcement, we encourage submission of abstracts from young-career astronomer to participate in this seminar series

  • Talks: Duration and frequency of the talks are still to be defined. Please note that each session will be considered a dedicated seminar. This means you'll have the opportunity to delve deeply into your research area of focus into each topic.
  • Participation: We strongly encourage you to attend in person, to fully engage with the community and make the most of this opportunity. To assist with your travel needs, funding is available upon request. If you're unable to join us on-site, don't worry—we also offer an online option.
  • Registration: You can apply using the dedicated Registration Form.

Our selection committee—composed of Postdoctoral Fellows and Staff astronomers from ESO Chile together with professors from Chilean Universities —will ensure a high-quality series of research seminars.  Building on the success of our previous online editions, we aim to make this event a prestigious platform for early-career astronomers to showcase their work. We hope this new edition will achieve the same recognition within the Chilean community as previous editions led by ESO Garching.
