The Library, Documentation, and Information Services Department (LDIS organigram) is a central information unit at ESO. It consists of the Libraries and the Information Repository teams.

The ESO Libraries in Garching and Santiago support your research by
‣ providing access to publications and other scientific content 
‣ sharing with you developments in publishing and research communication 
‣ networking with astronomy librarians around the world to fulfill your information requests efficiently
‣ developing and maintaining tools to provide tailored metrics that help to assess ESO’s scientific impact 

The ESO Information Repository (PDM) manages and supports the centralization, organization, preservation and distribution of ESO institutional, project and product documentation.

15 May 2024: IOP State of Peer Review 2024

IOP Publishing, the current publisher of ApJ and AJ, has released the results of the “State of Peer Review 2024” survey. Some key findings:

  • Bias – The proportion of respondents reporting to have experienced bias in the peer review process has gone down since 2020 (16% in 2024, compared with 24% in 2020)
  • Models of peer review — Double-anonymous peer review was the most popular response (over 50%) for both authors and reviewers 
  • Motivation to review – Interest in the paper remains the number one motivation to accept a review invitation, the same as in 2020
  • Use of AI – Views on the impact of generative AI on peer review were polarised

3 May 2024: A&A to remain Open Access also in 2024

EDP Sciences, the publisher of Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) just announced that the journal will continue its open access publication under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model for the third year in 2024, see the EDP press release.
