The MPG/ESO 2.2m Telescope
Summary
The 2.2m telescope at La Silla has been in operation since early 1984 and is on indefinite loan to ESO from the Max Planck Gesellschaft. The telescope time is shared between the MPI and ESO Observers. Operation and maintenance of the telescope is the responsibility of ESO.
The telescope (which is a fork mounted Ritchey-Chretien) was built by Zeiss and has been in use at La Silla since 1984. The telescope is at a geographical location of 70°44'4"543 W 29°15'15"433 S and an altitude of 2335 metres.
Current Instruments
The ESO/MPI 2.2m telescope hosts the following instruments:
- WFI: Wide Field Imager, a focal reducer-type camera at the Cassegrain focus and with a field of view of 34'x33'
- FEROS: A state-of-the-art bench-mounted, high-resolution, environmentally controlled, astronomical Échelle spectrograph
- GROND: Gamma-Ray Burst Optical/Near-Infrared Detector to investigate Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows and other transients simultaneously in seven filter bands
Decommissionned Instruments
- EFOSC2: ESO Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (v.2), is a very versatile instrument for low resolution spectroscopy and imaging. As of Period 81 the instrument is offered on the NTT
- IRAC1;
- IRAC2.
