ESO Movie 01: Remote Observing

Made in 1989, this video explains how astronomers could then observe with telescopes at the La Silla observatory in Chile, via a satellite link from the ESO headquarters in Europe. This remote observing allowed astronomers to save on travel.

Nowadays, at the Very Large Telescope, a new service mode has been implemented, whereby the observations are carried for the astronomers in Europe by staff astronomers in Chile.
