Optical telescopes

This video shows some of the most important optical telescopes designed and built since Galileo’s time. It highlights how the primary lenses and mirrors of telescopes have increased in size in the past few centuries, allowing astronomers to reveal more and more of the Universe around us. ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope, set to see first light later this decade, will have a primary mirror 39 metres in diameter, a giant leap in size.
